About XpoNential Management

More of what you want. Less of what you don't.

A business should be more than a job you own.

It can create income, opportunity, freedom, security and impact. It can support a family, develop people, serve a community and create choices that did not exist before.

The business is the vehicle. The life it helps create is the point.

XpoNential helps owners fine-tune that vehicle so it performs for the life they want today and the possibilities they want tomorrow.

Why XpoNential exists

A stronger business should create a better life, not consume one.

Independent healthcare businesses are remarkable engines.

They create careers. They serve communities. They support families. They build wealth. They give talented people a place to grow. And, for the owner, they can become one of the most important tools for creating the life they envisioned when they decided to take the risk of ownership in the first place.

But businesses change as they grow.

What once worked through instinct, effort and a small team eventually requires more structure. Financial visibility becomes more important. Leadership becomes more complicated. Execution requires cadence. Decisions become more consequential. And the owner can gradually become the person holding all of it together.

XpoNential exists to help change that.

We bring management capability, operating discipline and execution into the business while keeping the owner's objectives at the center of the work.

Because the goal is not to build someone else's version of a successful company.

It is to build the business that gets you more of what you want and less of what you don't.

Our vision

Better businesses. More capable people. More choices.

Our vision is to help build a generation of independent healthcare businesses that perform exceptionally while creating meaningful outcomes for the people connected to them.

That includes the owner, but it does not stop there.

A well-run business can create better careers for employees, stronger leaders, better experiences for customers and patients, greater stability for families and more opportunity within a community.

For the owner, performance creates something equally important: optionality.

  • Grow because you want to.
  • Stay independent because you want to.
  • Bring in a partner.
  • Create opportunities for the next generation.
  • Step away from some responsibilities.
  • Make another investment.
  • Sell when the time is right.
  • Or simply build a company that gives you more time to enjoy the life you already have.

We believe the strongest businesses create choices rather than obligations.

What we value

The values do not change when the workday starts.

We do not believe professional values should be a collection of words chosen for a conference-room wall.

The way we approach business should reflect the way we approach life and the way we treat the people around us.

Four values sit at the center of XpoNential.

Passion

Care enough for the work to matter.

Passion is not enthusiasm for its own sake. It is caring deeply enough to become invested in the outcome.

Businesses affect real people. Owners have risked something to build them. Employees and their families depend on them. Patients and communities are served by them.

That deserves energy, curiosity and genuine commitment.

We want to work with people and businesses we can care about, because meaningful work is better work.

Creativity

There is rarely only one way forward.

The obvious answer is not always the right answer, and the choices presented are not always the only choices available.

We challenge assumptions, connect ideas across disciplines and look for possibilities that may not be apparent at first.

Constraints are real. They do not have to eliminate creativity.

Some of the best business decisions begin with a simple question:

What else could be possible?

Consistency

The ordinary weeks build extraordinary businesses.

Sustainable performance is rarely created by a heroic month, an inspirational meeting or a binder full of recommendations.

It is created by doing the important things well, on cadence, over and over again.

Measure. Decide. Execute. Review. Adjust. Repeat.

Consistency turns good intentions into operating performance. It is also what makes improvement durable when attention inevitably moves to the next challenge.

Fun

Life is happening now.

Building something meaningful can be demanding without becoming miserable.

We believe serious work and enjoyment belong in the same room.

There should be laughter. Relationships. Celebration. Curiosity. Energy. A willingness not to take ourselves too seriously while taking the work very seriously.

If the purpose of building a better business is ultimately to create a better life, waiting until some future milestone to enjoy any of it misses the point.

How we work

Strategy matters. Execution is what changes the business.

XpoNential works inside the business rather than advising from the sidelines.

Depending on the situation, that may mean establishing the financial and operating baseline, building the plan, creating management infrastructure, leading specific workstreams, implementing new systems, establishing operating cadence, measuring results or managing an ownership transaction.

The scope changes.

The standard does not.

Own the outcome.

Recommendations are useful only when they lead to action. We stay close enough to the work to know whether implementation is happening and whether the expected result is showing up.

Tell the truth early.

Clear decisions require clear information. We address the business as it actually is, including the issues that are difficult, inconvenient or easy to postpone.

Measure what matters.

Activity is not performance. We establish the measures that matter, monitor them consistently and use the numbers to make better decisions.

Build capability, not dependency.

The business should become stronger because we were involved. Systems, leadership capability and operating discipline should remain valuable beyond any individual engagement.

Protect optionality.

Today's operating decisions shape tomorrow's choices. We consider both immediate performance and what each decision makes possible for the owner over time.

What XpoNential brings to the business

Management capability. Execution. Perspective.

Independent businesses do not always need more advice.

Sometimes they need additional management capacity.

XpoNential brings experienced operating capability into the company without requiring the owner to build every function internally.

We help establish priorities, operating cadence and accountability. We work across financial performance, operations, leadership and organizational execution. And when ownership changes through an acquisition, partnership, buy-in or sale, we can carry that understanding of the business into the transaction.

The objective is not to make the owner dependent on XpoNential.

It is to make the business more capable.

Founder & Managing Partner

Eric Nuss

XpoNential is the product of a career spent around healthcare businesses from nearly every angle.

Eric Nuss has worked across sales, operations, management, education, company building, acquisitions and ownership transitions. Along the way, his work has brought him inside thousands of dental practices and into relationships with owners, executives, clinicians, team members, entrepreneurs and industry leaders throughout healthcare.

Those experiences reinforced a belief that has shaped much of his career:

The financial performance of a business matters enormously, but the money is rarely the ultimate point.

The business is a vehicle.

It can create careers. It can develop leaders. It can support a family. It can build wealth. It can serve thousands of people. And, when built intentionally, it can give an owner greater control over how they spend their time and what they choose to do next.

That philosophy began taking formal shape during Eric's time at Henry Schein. His MBA work challenged the traditional distribution model by arguing that helping customers become more profitable businesses could itself become a product. He presented that work to Henry Schein CEO Stan Bergman and was subsequently given the opportunity to build the Business Solutions business that grew from it.

The years that followed added different perspectives: building companies, leading teams, operating healthcare businesses, working through acquisitions and integrations, and helping owners navigate transactions.

Not every chapter of Eric's career was a success. The experience of building, losing and rebuilding changed how he thinks about leadership, risk, identity and the role a business should play in a person's life. Those lessons became part of The Broken Parts and remain deeply connected to the philosophy behind XpoNential: build the business intentionally, but never confuse the vehicle with the destination.

XpoNential brings those experiences together.

Not because every business should follow the same path.

Quite the opposite.

The work starts with understanding where the owner actually wants to go.

The network

The right expertise matters more than pretending to have all of it.

Healthcare businesses intersect with disciplines no single person or firm should claim to master.

Over decades in the industry, Eric and the broader XpoNential network have developed relationships across operations, clinical leadership, finance, banking, accounting, law, technology, revenue cycle, marketing, transactions, investment and other specialized areas of healthcare.

When the work requires expertise outside our lane, we bring the right people into the room.

Our role is not to manufacture an answer internally simply because we can.

It is to help the owner get the right answer and keep the work coordinated around the larger objective.

Dental Business Institute textbooks

Where the thinking began

The framework has evolved. The belief behind it has not.

Years before XpoNential, Eric developed the operating curriculum for Henry Schein's Dental Business Institute.

The work was built around a simple premise: stronger businesses are created intentionally. Owners need a way to understand where they are, decide where they are going, build the systems and capabilities required to get there, measure what happens and then repeat the process.

The language and tools have evolved considerably since then.

The underlying belief has not.

Good businesses are built through a repeatable discipline of learning, deciding, executing and improving.

You decide where you want to go.

XpoNential helps make sure the business is capable of getting you there.

For some owners, that means growth.

For others, it means more margin, stronger leadership, less dependence on the owner, more time, a successful acquisition, a future transition or simply a business that works better than it does today.

There is no universal version of the ideal outcome.

That's the point.

More of what you want. Less of what you don't.
